Hydroponic vertical growing system
Save space and money, go vertical!

The Fruitwise Hydroponics System is an intensive hydroponics column-system. The hydroponics column incorporates all the basic hydroponics principles that ensure its success. The system effectively utilises the vertical space in the growing area to increase plant populations. Higher plant populations improve yields under protected-environment cultivation.

What is the Fruitwise Hydroponics column?

The concept hinges around a perforated central column. The column is made up of up to 10 injection-molded segments that lock together. Each cell is made up of the following components:

Central core segment
Flexible sleeve
Foam seal
Cable ties (x2)

Each segment has drainage perforations above a leak-proof shoulder. The sleeve is dragged over the core and tied off on the shoulder with a cable tie. The cell is filled with root medium and tied off at the top of the cell. The sleeve is white on the outside and black on the inside.

How does it work?

Seedlings or runners are planted into the indicated apertures on the cell. Sub-lateral pipes branch off the main irrigation system and run parallel with the column. A self-compensating dripper is allocated to each cell. A stake is connected to the dripper with a length of micro-tube and is inserted into the cell. Excess nutrient solution is recycled via the interconnecting drainage system.

Physical Construction

The drainage system is constructed from perforated 65-75mm LDPE pipe. Staggered double rows are laid down with a pathway in between. A 1.0m spacing in a row, between the columns is recommended. The distance between the rows can be 0.8m and 1.0m in the pathway. This effectively gives you one column per m2 or alternatively 40 – 50 plants per m2. The rows end in a gutter that drains the effluent nutrient solution into a collecting tank that can be recycled. Double trellis wires support the top of the columns. The trellis wires run parallel with the drainage system at the height of the upper shoulder of the top cell in the column. The floor of the growing area is preferably covered with white plastic.
