Although still in the early days of development, LED (light emitting diode) is fast becoming a popular option, due to their ‘green’ credentials. LEDs have a much longer life span (up to 50,000 hours) with very little light loss over the period and because only the required part of the spectrum is produced they can run at a much lower power than other forms of lighting, whilst still providing the required levels of light.

LED lighting is significantly cooler running than HID or even fluorescent lighting, an optimal temperature must be maintained within the unit to ensure a consistent quality of light in both overall output and spectrum. The majority of LED luminaires available achieve this by means of computer cooling fans.

This type of light uses a low amount of energy and is environmentally friendly, whilst still providing a bright and intense light.
